The museum collection includes an estimated 6,500 photographic images including glass plate negatives, ambrotypes, lantern slides, daguerreotypes, tintypes, sheet film negatives, roll film negatives, transparencies, cine film, calotypes, postcards and colour and monochrome photographic prints. In addition to these the museum has a secondary collection of approximately 40,000 photographic copies of mainly local interest.

Photographers represented in the collection include Thomas Davies, John Longshaw, Samuel Mather Webster, William Fell, Thomas Birtles, Walter Crompton, James Parkinson, J.E. Birtles and the artist Oswald Garside.
