Nursing in the 50s and 60s
A Cadet Nurse could start their training at the Newton-le-Willows Training School as young as 15 1/2 years of age. Cadet Nurses were required to spend 3 days a week in college and 2 days at the hospital. During this time, they worked in all hospital departments which provided a greater understanding of the running of the hospital. A Cadet Nurse uniform comprised of a hem line at least 8 inches off the floor along with Oxford type shoes with leather soles and tips.

Warrington Hospitals Training School for Nurses
The Warrington Hospitals Training School for Nurses was based at Warrington General Hospital, Lovely Lane. It incorporated both the Warrington Infirmary and General Hospital and was recognised as a complete General Training School for Nurses. Training School intakes were on the 1st January 1st April 1st July and 1st October. Girls with a good standard of education were accepted for three years’ general training from the age of 18 years. The Training School staff included qualified Sister Tutors who would train the students. Training allowances during the 50s and 60s were £273 per annum (Year 1), £284 (Year 2) and £299 (Year 3), from this £123 per annum was deducted to cover board and use of uniforms. Students worked a 44-hour week with 28 days annual leave with full allowances.
