In 1917 the Reverend Downham of St Paul`s Church on Bewsey Road wanted to acknowledge the men and boys who went to war from the Bewsey area not just those associated with his Church. A list of 160 names from Hoyle Street, Lilford Street, Catherine Street, Pierpoint Street, Edward Street and Pitt Street. The Plaque was first placed on the home of the first Bewsey Soldier to be killed in the Great War 1914-18, Harry Kent son of Harry and Elizabeth Kent of 42 Hoyle Street. The Plaque was to spend a week in each street on rotation throughout the duration of the Great War and then to be placed into Hoyle Street Mission.

The Plaque has now been lost but a photograph and the list of names appeared in both the Warrington Guardian (24th January 1917) and Warrington Examiner (20th January 1917). The Great War Records were damaged during World War Two so are incomplete. With just the bare minimum of information I have tried to identify these soldiers.

My main source of reference are all categories of Ancestry.co.uk others I have listed below each soldier. In some cases, where more than one soldier share very similar details,  it has been difficult to identify the specific man associated with Bewsey, in these cases I have included each set of potential details. Where I am uncertain I have put question mark.

The men appear on the list in the order in which they appear in the newspaper.

The information may help in tracing your family during a time of great conflict.

I hope the information is correct and if you are reading it and have any information which will help I would like to hear from you.
